The Kreutzer Sonata / Whose Fault?

(Kreutzerova sonáta / Čia vina?)
by Leo Tolstoy and Sophia Tolstaya, in an adaptation by Daniela Brezániová,
Matej Feldbauer and Pavol Viecha

The Kreutzer Sonata is a novella by Leo Tolstoy named after Beethoven’s Kreutzer Sonata. The novella was published in 1889, and was promptly censored by the Russian authorities because of „sexual moral and pervert aspects“.

The novella tells a story about a man whose tormenting jealousy leads to crime. The main character, Pozdnyshev, is divided into three actors and Viecha’s stage adaptation combines tragic motives with comedy. The whole story is narrated by Tolstoy’s wife Sophia, whose personal life was determined by the love and despotism of her husband.
